Es una historia a la Pinocho, que podría considerarse una inocentada si no resultara creíble para los expertos en ballenas: una ballena jorobada “se tragó” este viernes a un pescador de langostas de Massachusetts, Estados Unidos, y luego lo escupió sano y salvo, y capaz de contar su aventura.

“Hola a todos, quiero aclarar lo que me sucedió hoy”, escribió el pescador Michael Packard, de Provincetown, a unos 200 km al este de Boston (este), luego de que su historia fuera recogida por el diario local, el Cape Cod Times.

“Buceaba para buscar langostas cuando una ballena jorobada intentó comerme. Estuve dentro de su boca cerrada durante 30 a 40 segundos, antes de que emergiera a la superficie y me escupiera. Tengo moretones por todos lados pero ningún hueso roto. Agradezco a los salvavidas de Provincetown por sus cuidados y ayuda”.

Hay al menos un testigo confiable: Josiah Mayo lo acompañaba en esta pesca y contó al Cod Times que vio a su compañero siendo eyectado por la ballena en el océano Atlántico y llamó a los salvavidas.

Y resulta que Mayo es hijo de uno de los investigadores y expertos en ballenas del Centro de Estudios Costeros de Provincetown, dijo a la AFP, Jooke Robbins, directora de estudios de las ballenas jorobadas en esa institución.

“Conozco a las personas implicadas (…) por lo cual tengo todas las razones para creer que lo que dicen es cierto”, indicó Robbins.

Nunca había escuchado hablar de un “accidente” similar, pero “es posible que (el pescador) haya estado en el mal lugar, a la mala hora”, estimó.

Cuando estas ballenas buscan comida, “se lanzan con la boca abierta, tragan peces y agua muy rápidamente, y luego rechazan el agua a través de sus barbas”, que actúan “como un filtro”, explicó.

“Su boca es bastante grande” pero “su garganta es bastante estrecha, no hay ninguna chance de que pueda tragar algo tan grande” como un hombre, añadió.

La ballena jorobada, que según Mayo era aún joven, pudo “no detectar lo suficientemente rápido que había un intruso” en su boca, explicó la experta. Una vez que “se tragó” al hombre, es posible que “haya estado más bien sorprendida y haya abierto la boca para largarlo”.

Aunque se desconocen todos los detalles, asegura que se impone una conclusión: la región de Provincetown y Cap Cod comienza a notar el retorno de los turistas tras 15 meses de pandemia y “es importante que la gente sea consciente” de la presencia de estos poderosos mamíferos marinos, que adultos, según la edad, miden entre nueve y 15 metros.

“Y si ven una ballena, permanezcan lejos. Es verdaderamente importante dejar espacio a las ballenas”, dijo.
