Sembradores mexicanos de cempasúchil o flor de muertos han colocado personajes de calaveras, llamadas catrinas, en sus cultivos con la esperanza de atraer visitantes para superar la crisis económica que atraviesan por la sequía.
Una decena de calaveras catrinas monumentales adornan los sembradíos de flor de muerto en Mitla, Oaxaca, un municipio zapoteco que en lengua náhuatl se llama “Mictlán”, que significa “lugar de los muertos”.
Las calaveras, construidas con materiales degradables como cartón y carrizo, se sostienen con alambres y cuerdas entre las flores, son el principal adorno de los altares y ofrendas del Día de Muertos, que México celebra el 1 y 2 de noviembre.
Los campesinos colocan los esqueletos para atraer a visitantes y paliar las consecuencias económicas por la sequía.
“En las redes sociales vuela rapidísimo (el anuncio) y por eso nosotros dijimos: vamos a darle un poquito de realce con las catrinas, el esfuerzo que hicimos para hacerlas, para construirlas, es para motivar a nuestros invitados que llegaron a nuestros campos”, dijo a EFE Ramón García, un campesino de 58 años de edad que también siembra maíz, chile, ajo y tomate.
Los ejidatarios de Unión Zapata reciben apoyo de la Dirección de Turismo de Mitla, municipalidad zapoteca declarada “pueblo mágico” en 2015 por la Secretaría de Turismo del Gobierno de México.
El municipio dirige a los visitantes en un tranvía impulsado por un tractor.
Ya en los campos, los turistas se toman fotografías con las calaveras y conocen el esfuerzo de los ejidatarios para hacer que broten las flores en épocas de pocas lluvias.
“Están viendo ahorita que por la sequía que tenemos les está costando mucho a los agricultores mantener las flores, por eso es que les hacemos una invitación a que compren lo que es local”, expresó Elías Bautista, agente municipal.
Sembrar para no migrar
Los campesinos han padecido los efectos de la sequía, que afecta a dos tercios del territorio mexicano, según los últimos datos del Monitor de Sequía de la Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua).
En este contexto, la feria de la flor y las catrinas son un intento del municipio para evitar que las personas migren del pueblo, donde el principal ingreso económico son las remesas que envían los paisanos desde Estados Unidos.
“Estados Unidos nos ha apoyado bastante con los migrantes que están allá, o sea, nos apoya enviando remesas de dinero a cada familia y los que tienen familia. Y ahorita estamos viendo la forma de crear un nuevo método para obtener recursos”, agregó Bautista.
Honrar a la muerte sembrando la vida
Para el ejidatario Gerardo García, la flor de muerto se tiene que sembrar y regarla con el agua de los pozos, que ahora tienen una profundidad de hasta 15 metros, cuando hace apenas dos décadas, se hallaba agua a 7 metros de profundidad.
“Nos gusta trabajar el campo porque es herencia de nuestros padres y nuestros abuelos y a esos difuntos que vienen a visitarnos no los vamos a defraudar”, comentó.
Las tradiciones de Días de Muertos en Oaxaca son las más importantes del año, incluso por encima de la Navidad, pues simboliza el encuentro espiritual con los seres queridos ya fallecidos.
“Que vean el esfuerzo que estamos haciendo como sus descendientes en trabajar sus tierras en trabajar sus campos porque en el trabajo está la vida y gracias a las enseñanzas que nos dieron para salir adelante y así mantenemos a nuestras familias”, dijo.
Además, es la única temporada del año en la que más de 70 familias pueden reunir dinero para todos los gastos del año.
“Es la mejor temporada del año para sacar para nuestros gastos para tener un ahorro y un ingreso y preparar para el próximo año”, explicó la campesina Noemí Aragón, quien sembró 25 surcos de flor de muerto, de los que obtendrá casi 50.000 pesos (más de 2.500 dólares).
